Chapter 1 : Is this what you really want?

'If you know the person you love doesn't care about you, stay away from that person.' 'If you know you're not getting love from the person you love, set yourself free.' 'If you can't handle the anguish you're feeling because of the person you love, embrace the truth and start over.'

The light from the full moon shines on my face. As a result of the frigid air contacting my skin, I get a shiver. The insects' chirping reaches my ears, and the rest of the surroundings are so peaceful that it puts me at ease.

I haven't been able to sleep correctly since Zachary told me that Amelia, the woman he truly loves, had returned.

I found breathing impossible when he indicated that he wanted a divorce. I watched the type of man he is after being married to him for more than a year. He is pompous and self-centered since I know he does not love me.

We only got married because of a single mistake, a one-night stand that caused our lives to diverge. We decided to marry as a result of this blunder. I have no idea what happened to him then, but from what I recall, he was completely and utterly destroyed.

On the other hand, I spent the evening mingling with the rest of the company's employees. We were having a terrific time until I lost track of what was happening. When I opened my eyes, I was in a bed with an unknown guy who turned out to be Zachary.

I tried to flee when it happened. I am conscious that I made a mistake, but the moment I opened the door to the room, my life began to improve. I noticed an older man with widened eyes and a frozen body as if he had seen a ghost in front of him.

My entire life changed after that one day. I'm not sure if that was a fortune because I had a one-night stand with a member of the Grey Family, a very wealthy family.

As soon as he recognized me, the older man, who I later found was Zachary's grandfather, struck up a discussion with me. He questioned me. He asked about every element of my life, and I answered him entirely and honestly. I thought he would kick me out of their mansion when the time came, but I was mistaken. Instead, he took both hands in his, smiled, and thanked me for being a woman in Zachary's life.

I explained to him that I was unfamiliar with Zachary and that it was a mistake on my part. Even though he was aware, he insisted it was fated for us. What is the story of that fate? Don't get me wrong: I don't believe in fate, but I also don't believe it exists because every one of us is the captain of our ship. We make our own decisions and form our own opinions.

After we conversed, I left their house and returned to prepare for my job as a designer in a small city-based clothing company. I had assumed that everything had been resolved, but it turned out that my notion was inaccurate. Zachary's grandfather approached me and informed me that he was organizing my wedding with his grandson, Zachary.

I was utterly at a loss for what to do at the time. I am conscious that I am unsuitable for marriage to that type of man; therefore, I declined the wedding. I have no reason to be proud of myself because all I do is life in a shabby apartment in the city with my grandma, I never met my parents, and I have nothing to be proud of!

But not long ago, I began to notice some strange feelings in my body. My body felt heavy, I had no desire to move even when I was at work, and I was easily irritated or angered since I didn't understand what was happening. My employees were perplexed when I found out I was pregnant because of what had happened to me before that discovery.

I had no idea what activities were expected of me at the time. Concerning my pregnancy, I had kept something from my grandma, but she discovered it.

When my grandmother found out I was pregnant, she asked, "Who is the father of your child?" I told her everything, beginning at the beginning and continuing to the finish.

At the time, I assumed she would be dissatisfied with me; instead, my grandmother smiled at me, and, to my surprise, she knew Zachary's grandfather! She informed me that Zachary's grandfather had spoken with her and explained what had happened between Zachary and me so that the marriage could proceed.

Many guests attended our wedding, including notable politicians, business leaders, and families. Everyone was talking about the wedding, but I knew and felt Zachary wasn't interested in getting married. He only agreed to the marriage to maintain their family's reputation, and he did not abandon the woman who became pregnant through him.

When Zachary and I initially moved in together, he told me that the unborn kid in my womb was the only thing that united us. He is uninterested in me and refuses to recognize that I am his wife. I understand where he's coming from, but as time has passed, I've seen a darker side to Zachary.

He constantly claimed that I had planned everything that had happened and made out on him for his riches to get out of a bad financial situation. I know what he said, but I have repeatedly told him that not doing so is not one of my objectives. He didn't believe what I stated, even though it was congruent with what he previously knew.

I miscarried our child after we had married for a few months, and he seemed entirely bothered about it—rude behavior, including cruel words or emotional abuse. I put up with everything since, in the time we've been together, I've noticed many good features in him. Except for me, he cared about his employees, and he ran a foundation that helps impoverished children, which he visited regularly. People admire him because of the positive relationships he fosters with everyone he meets.

When his grandfather told me about it, I discovered what had happened to him. He told me that his long-term girlfriend left him four years ago to marry another man who is more successful and rich than he is. At the time, the Gray Group of Companies was only a modest construction enterprise in the city called Gray Enterprises. However, throughout the years, Zachary dedicated all of his time to growing their firm to the point that it is now the most successful in the city.

Yes, he is snobbish, and he treated me with contempt, but I am aware that his behavior toward me was motivated by something that had happened to him in the past. I tried to persuade him to take me as his wife, but nothing I said or did seem to make any difference. He was completely unaware of what I was working on; despite my undivided attention, care, and compassion, nothing came of my efforts.

And now, the focus of our most recent talk is his desire for a divorce. That is tough to accept because I know my heart is growing fonder of him by the day.

When I heard his voice behind me, I spun around and said, "There you are."

As he stood there, I softly turned to face him. His appearance is unintelligible to me as a blank sheet of white paper. He began to walk in my direction. When he came to a complete stop in front of me, he handed me the brown packet he was holding. He's got it in his right hand.

"This is the divorce documentation. I require your signature on this, "He stated.

I withdrew the brown envelope from my pocket and took the paper inside. I went over it. It hurt my heart as I was reading, but I managed to keep a bitter smile on my face.

"Is this what you want, Zach?" I inquired about him.

He didn't respond. He gave me a solemn gaze. I know I have no compelling motive to remain by his side. His grandfather died the month before last as a result of an illness. The person who always supported me and convinced me that Zachary would soon realize he couldn't live without me and that he loved me is no longer with us.
