Azeph took a deep breath and tried to remain calm as he watched the count’s men haul the man’s body toward the car to send it for more investigations.

He could still remember the man’s look when they cornered him. The mad smile on his lips, and his last words as he directed the barrel of his gun toward his head and fired without hesitation.

He and Louis had remained standing there in long silence before Alan came running toward them to find them standing there.

He asked what happened and Louis explained how the man shot himself. But none of them uttered what they heard.
