Carlos couldn't get past that notion and I crushed him by gently reminding him: “At least for now, he's the one who treats me best.”

He no longer challenged me, but was more intrigued by my relationship with Léo. He questioned: “As far as I know, there is no agreement between my brother’s families and mine on how they met each other?”

I didn't want to divulge Léo's past, because it was his secret and it wasn't up to me to tell the world about it.

But to satisfy Carlos' curiosity, I said: “We've known each other for a long time. He is the son of my mother’s best friend, he is my brother.”

My explanation didn't seem very good to Carlos, but he didn't go any further either. He turned and went to the kitchen to prepare dinner.

Looking at her straightened back, I smiled silently and walked up the stairs. I went to my sister-in-law's room first to get some wet wipes to remove my makeup.
