Chapter 40

“You shocked everyone, including me,” I said, breaking the comfortable silence and playing with the bubbles. A sense of tranquility bathed me. Jake’s strong arms wrapped around me, pulling me close as we settled in the bath. I could feel his hard chest pressing against my back.

He hummed softly, his fingers trailing lazy circles along the skin on my arm as he leaned back against the edge of the tub. “I wanted to close your mouth with my tongue but decided against it,” he replied, amused. A small smile tugged at the corners of my lips as I leaned into his touch. “I know it was a bit sudden, but I wanted to see how serious you are about marrying me.”

“We can marry tomorrow if you want,” I chuckled, reaching up to cup his cheek in my hand. I felt him lean against my palm, “I couldn’t be happier, Jake.”

We sat in comfortable silence for a moment, the only sound the gentle lapping of the water against the sides of the tub. It was a moment of perfect peace and calmness.

“I’m just surprised
