31: Are You Really Doing This on Purpose?

Louise saw the stubbornness and undying love in Jacob's eyes. If he loved her so deeply, he shouldn't have left without a word all those years ago. Seeing him chain-smoke in distress, she sighed, "I should get going if there's nothing else to discuss. One last thing, Jacob, please don’t hurt Lizzie anymore." With that, she left the coffee shop.

Jacob sank into his chair, gazing out of the window for what seemed like an eternity before finally pulling out two hundred-dollar bills from his wallet and leaving them on the table. He then rose and left the coffee house.

Bruno, preparing for a social engagement that night, returned to his apartment to change clothes. As he entered, he found Lizzie, tiny and trembling under the covers, her forehead cold and sweaty, her disheveled hair sticking to her face.

Is this her way of appealing to his sympathy? Bruno moved closer, his brows furrowed as he scrutinized her.
