Adeline sized up Bruno’s indifferent demeanor, realizing he truly didn't care for Lizzie. As she found herself delighting in Lizzie’s pale, bloodless face, Adeline felt a twisted sense of satisfaction. What good did it do to be a heiress, or even Bruno's wife, if Lizzie gained nothing from it?

Lizzie sat, lost in thought, in the sprawling classroom. Louise took a seat next to her, taking in Lizzie's haggard complexion. "Lizzie, are you okay? Didn't get a good night's sleep, did you? Your dark circles are so prominent," Louise stared at her with concern.

"I'm fine, just had a restless night," Lizzie replied with a faint smile, not wanting to worry Louise unnecessarily.

Louise frowned, skeptical. "Really? Are you sure you hadn't caught a cold? Maybe you should go home and rest."

"Don’t worry, I’ll rest at home after the few classes we have this morning," Lizzie reassured her, lightly patting Louise's shoulder. "We just have a couple of hours of class, remember?"
