Chapter 16

As the weeks progressed, we settled into a routine. Ashton started his job the following week, everything online. We ended up having to swing by his job so that we could pick up a laptop for him.

That was a bit of an otherworldly trip. There was literally no one on the road. No one on the street. It was like it was freaking Armageddon outside and it made the world feel like a ghost town. Like Ashton and I were the only people left alive. The guy who gave him the laptop placed it outside the building doors, still in its packaging, along with the software to install, and wrapped in a plastic bag. Told us not to get it until he was back in the building. It was strange, but I get it.

After that, most of our daytime was spent side by side, but on different laptops with headphones on. Ashton had to go through an entire new employees orientation which took about a week with everyone trying to get used to using Zoom and sharing screens and just doing everything that they normall
