Vanessa awoke the next morning with a terrible headache. She was still dressed in yesterday’s clothes. Flashbacks of takeout and sake bombs came flooding back. It was then that Vanessa noticed the two women next to Laurie. One was an elderly woman, her skin wrinkled and drawn. Long grey hair trailed down her back. A variety of glittering rings covered her arthritic fingers. Though the body had aged, her bright mossy eyes gleamed with vitality. Next to her was a younger woman, probably near Vanessa’s age. She had soft-looking red hair that fell past her shoulders, and striking turquoise eyes. The fiery-red hair and brilliant eyes shone brightly against her pale, freckled skin. She was one of the most unique-looking people Vanessa had ever seen. “Please give a warm welcome to Matlena and Brona. They have come to help us strengthen the complex and protect those within it.” The older woman’s gaze moved to Vanessa. She studied her carefully. Vanessa did not feel the need to look away. That wasn’t what made Vanessa’s jaw drop. The room was made entirely of glass. It extended beyond the building walls and onto a gorgeous glass overhang. Vanessa walked to the edge of the glittering balcony and looked up. Encased completely in its transparent material, she could see an expanse of soft blues and fluffy white clouds. It was almost like being outside as she stared up at the sunny Georgia sky. “What is this place?” Vanessa asked with wonder. “It was Marcus’s mother’s. She loved all things green.” There was a sadness in Nick’s voice. They took a seat on a small stone bench as they began to eat their sandwiches and fruit. “What was she like?” Vanessa asked between bites. “Marcus’s mother, I mean.” Nick smiled. “She was beautiful and kind. There was a gentleness to her nature, and at the same time a deep strength. She was generous, and just, but she also didn’t take any shit from the Alpha or anyone else.” “Hmm sounds a lot like Aria, minus the foul mouth and no filter.”

In that moment she would have done anything he asked of her. A large hand grabbed her ass, pushing her forward, driving her down onto him. She cried out as her climax hit. Nick thrust erratically several times and then squeezed his hands tightly around Vanessa’s hips as he found his own release. They sat there a few moments, gasping for breath before falling down onto the mattress. The wave of euphoria that enveloped Vanessa was incredibly satisfying. Nick scooped her up into his arms and she pressed her cheek to his chest. Within minutes their breathing had evened out and they were both fast asleep. Lewis took a swig of his energy drink before continuing. “I found one of her coven members on social media and convinced her to talk to me.” He gave another mischievous wink. “Apparently Elsie was known for her gifts with telepathy. She gave a quick nod and the tingling took her under once more. They reappeared in the hallway, just at the edge of the now-mound of bodies. Several of the lycans were on their feet, fighting fruitlessly as Collectors clung to their shoulders, necks, and legs. A cold wind blew down the corridor and Vanessa lifted her hands in the air. As she called upon her icy gift, every single Collector turned in her direction. They must have been drawn to her power. “Get ready!” she shouted as loudly as she could. The lycans who were on their feet seemed to comprehend her meaning as they dropped quickly to the ground. A massive wave of small knife-like ice shards sped across the room. Vanessa tried to control the direction they went, but in her panic she lost control. Ice went everywhere. She cringed as several small, jagged ice shards pierced the limbs and torsos of her companions as well as the Collectors. She had to pray their lycan healing would protect them from the worst of it.
