87- Christmas Presents
Present time. Rayan was all but forgotten with those words as the kids swarmed around Howard, eager for whatever trinkets had been prepared for them. Gail put on some festive music as packages were distributed, and boxes were exchanged. Damien was the only one who didn’t run off with the other kids. He was still busy at work with his picture.
“Damien! Damien! Look! You got a present too!” Sophie came bounding back over with two little packages, handing one to her brother before taking him by the hand and dragging him off. “Come on, let’s go open them together!”
“They’re some good kids,” Rayan sighed wistfully, admiring his newly colorful bandages.
“You did very well with such a large group of kids. I’m impressed.” Scott leaned in to steal a kiss.
“I like kids well enough, I just don’t get much opportunity to interact with them.”

Michael couldn’t help fidgeting with the zipper on the coat Edwardo had gotten him for Christmas. “Oh GROSS!” Rayan exclaimed in disgust. “Why does it smell so bad?!’“Well, I told you there would probably be a little smell,” Scott said levelheadedly, “It’s not that bad.”Scott was doing his best to look unbothered for Rayan’s benefit, but was stealthily breathing through his mouth. The whirring sound of the mini saw echoed through the exam room. The long awaited day for Rayan’s casts to come off had finally come. The physician in charge had taken Rayan’s larger leg cast off first, and the stench coming off the limb was nearly unbearable.The whirring stopped, and with the hard protective layer of the other leg cast removed, the physician set to cutting away the gauze underneath. The physical therapy session ended just in time for a late lunch. Rayan had been given a little goodie bag with some stress balls and elastic resistance bands, along with a rather nice water bottle and a thick pair of slipper socks with the rubber grips on the bottom. Considering how cold it was outside, it was the socks Rayan was most thankful for. In their rush to make the morning appointment, Scott and Rayan both forgot he would need a pair of shoes.The chilly weather wasn’t about to put a damper on Rayan’s mood! “Let me think about it?”Michael’s words replayed themselves over and over and over again in Edwardo’s head. It hadn’t been an outright “no,” but Edwardo knew the second his question left his mouth that morning that their relationship was nowhere near repaired enough to ask such a thing.Let me think about it…It had barely been a week since Edwardo came back from his family holiday in Mexico, but that night had been the only one they had together. Edwardo waited patiently for Michael to finish his meeting with the city’s creative planning department. With his entire afternoon open, he wasn’t about to miss out on a prime date opportunity. Besides, he remembered Michael saying something about his friend’s court case starting soon, and how he was supposed to testify as a witness. Once that got started they’d miss out on their afternoon activities for sure. Edwardo had offered to go to the courthouse with him as moral support, but Michael insisted he could handle it. Edwardo wasn’t too sure about that though. Sure, on the outside Michael seemed as cheerful and spunky as ever, but Edwardo had a sneaking suspicion at least some of it was getting to him.
