Chapter 88

Bas POV

I watched her car drive off, the taillights fading into the night. A pain gnawed at my heart, knowing she was suffering but pretending not to. Did I think Joe deserved what he got? Yes, of course. He caused us so much pain. But I wished she had told me, then I would have taken care of it, and she wouldn't be feeling so guilty.

I sighed. How could things go from great to worse in just a split second?

Turning, I saw Aubrey standing there, looking at me. The pain in her eyes was unmistakable. She needed an explanation.

The car ride home was quiet and unbearably long. Aubrey, who was always chatty, remained silent, staring out the window as we drove. She must have really been hurt, I thought, all because of me.

When we got home, Aubrey walked out without saying a word, slamming the door behind her. As much as she was mad, I knew it was important we talk, so I followed her inside.

"Aubrey, I'm sorry," I said, my voice soft and sincere.

She sat by the mirror, cleaning off her makeup
