My eyes widen, taken aback by his reaction. Lucas was known across the realm for his ruthlessness. But he has never raised his voice at me. Not once.

“What does it look like?” I said, still shocked by how fast he switched up. “I was returning the gesture.”

He arched his brow. “Which I find very strange. You would never welcome me with open hands. Not you, Sarah.”

Lucas wasn't entirely wrong; I had my selfish reasons. If he thinks that I was playing along—which I was doing, willingly—he wouldn't be so anxious to spy on me.

Nevertheless, kissing him hadn't been as bad as I’d imagined and I might be tempted to try again.

No, I wouldn't.

It might send the wrong signals and make things between us uncomfortable. I knew what I was doing being flirtatious over the phone but right now, I have taken things too far.

“You're right,” I chided myself. “That's unlike me. Do you need me to apologize?”

“No. Never.” His eyes had lost their hardness when they settled on me again.
