FORTY FOUR

Two days later and still there was no news for Jane. There were no more sightings of little girls humming the ‘Don’t Worry, Be Happy’ tune and neither were there any more photos of her coming in strange white envelopes. There was nothing. Nada. It was as if the sender had disappeared from the face of the earth. Jane frowned, had it all been a bad dream?

“Jane? Jane? Earth to Jane?” Daniel tugged at her hand from his office chair, drawing her attention away from the door and back to him.

“Why do you keep looking at the door?” he asked when she finally turned her gaze back to him.

I’m waiting for another letter…

“Oh, just admiring your timber door is all,” she replied with gritted teeth. Boy, she was a pathetic liar, but Daniel didn’t mind. He yanked her hand and pulled her down, nestling her on his lap.

“Are you nervous about the Interior Design competition?” he asked, placing a hand at the back of her neck, sensually massaging them.
