Chapter 15: Destiny

Waking up at lunch time, I struggle to open my eyes before I reach for the black cotton curtain next to the bed. I pull it up just an inch and then wince as the sun temporarily blinds me.

“Shit!” I yell as I accidentally knock the stale glass of water over on the night table next to me.

Hurrying to climb out of bed, I rush into the bathroom to grab a small light brown chenille towel to wipe up the water that I spilled just a moment ago. When I glance at the door, I notice that it is open, even though I could have sworn that I closed it before I went to bed. Scanning the room, my eyes stop in the corner as I watch Alexander stretch silently and then stand to walk over to my side.

I nearly jump out of my skin as soon as I see him, and a little scream erupts from my throat as I struggle to keep it down. How did I not see him there as I rushed past him? Was he sitting in the rocking chair when I woke up? Or did he just come in while I was in the bathroom?
