Chapter Six

We don’t go right up to her house, hiding a distance away from behind a neighbouring wall we can see all the action from here. Myah has been handcuffed and is being dragged into a military squad car. Her parents appear to be yelling incoherently as they try to reach their daughter. Cecilia, crouching next to me, looks terrified. There were at least seven men in military uniform from what I could see, and each one of them was standing look out or trying to keep her parents away from Myah.

“Have you guys got a place to hide?” Cecilia suddenly asks,

“Yeah, in the woods next to the dairy farm, you know the one?” Axel responds. She nods,

“I’m going to need to borrow it, I’ll meet you there. Axel, can you demonstrate your phasing to me?” It seemed like an odd request given the nearby presence, but he does so anyway by putting his hand through the fence and back again. “Okay, thanks, you two run.” Cecilia runs off to the opposite side of the street and miraculously jumps over a high fence using the side of a house wall to give her leverage.

“So um, did we find out what she does yet?” Axel asks, but I just shake my head and keep watch. From this distance we had a pretty good view of everything that was happening. I see Cecilia jump over another fence, and fully runs towards the squad car her sister is sitting in, completing a very well executed slide taking and disappearing underneath the car. Moment later her sister opens the car door and begins to run - Cecilia close behind her after walking through the car? Impossible. My conclusion was that she could Phase too, but is there just a set amount of powers or can people have the same as others? The military men notice - and pull up their guns.

I’m not a gun person, all I know is that those guns were large and pointed at Cecilia and Myah. I hear the words ‘fire at will’ and my throat tightens. Holding my breath I see Cecilia and Myah spin around to face the oncoming barrage of bullets - waving their arms to each side of them the bullets seem to follow their own course and plummet into the ground. I wasn’t sure if what I was seeing was real. I see Cecilia take a step forward and two of the squad cars go flying into the military men - they are not injured by the event but they certainly have lost vision of the sisters. We see them start running towards us,

“Okay, let’s go!” Axel exclaims, but as I get up, another shot is fired. I look to see where it came from - the sound was different to the others and the men with guns all began to look around where the source was from. I didn’t want to know.

As I stand, I hear Myah scream - she stops running and my legs lose balance as I see what happened. Cecilia was shot. Myah is shaking her but she isn’t reacting.

She isn’t responding.

Axel let’s go of my arm and runs towards Myah, pulling on her waist to get her up off the ground. She runs with him and as they pass by me he pushes me - hard.

I wouldn’t have run if he didn’t.

We don’t stop running until we reach Axel’s hideout. He lets us in with enough time to spare before we drop from exhaustion. I can barely hear anything. I feel numb. My body wakes up when I hear Myah whale in tears. Collapsed on the floor she’s holding her hair tightly, sobbing and crying. The pain in me couldn’t be anything like hers. This was her sister, someone she grew up with. Someone that was a part of who she was. Axel looks at me, unsure as to what to do. I don’t know what to do either. Questions began to form in my head. Myah was clearly an Abnormal, how did they find out about her? What are they doing with Cecilia’s body? Where did that stray shot come from? Walking towards one of the busy rusted tables, I notice that Axel was gathering intel on Myah as well, although at no point does he write her name anywhere. Myah continues to cry, and I don’t stop her. Clutching her arms, I see her dig her own nails into her skin.

I couldn’t believe she was gone. Even though it was completely the wrong time for it, my mind flashed back to the moment she kissed me. It felt so passionate. She still feels real to me, like she is still here...how could she be gone?

*insert memories, flashbacks, etc, FILL THIS GAP*

“Chase!” Snapping out of it I look up in front of me, in bitter confusion I see swarms of dense clouds forming on the ceiling. Lights shone and sparkled from the dark hole that was forming. What was happening? Axel is at my side and I see Myah pushing herself against the wall as far from it as possible - and yet I don’t feel any fear. Winds pick up inside the small shed and Axel tries to shield his eyes with his arm.

We all jump as an object falls and in under a moment and collides with the floor - the wind stops - the wind in our lungs also ceases. Lying there, on the floor, motionless.

Cecilia’s body.

Myah holds her mouth, suppressing sounds I can only imagine. Her eyes well up with tears again as she begins to approach her sister. We are all startled by the gasp of air taken in by a corpse. Backing away further, Cecilia’s eyes open - gasping for air she sits up.

“CC?” Myah barely whispers. Her sister stares at Myah, who begins to stand to approach, but Cecilia moves away. My uncle once had amnesia, and this looked like the same expression he once had upon waking up and seeing his wife for the first time. She didn’t know who we were.

Myah attempts to approach Cecilia but she rushes herself to her feet clumsily and pushes what she notices to be the door behind her. We all pursue - I was mostly fearful that the men she helped her sister escape were somehow nearby and were going to find us all. Breaking out into a run in the attempts to catch Cecilia seemed to be futile - she was very quick.

“Cecilia!” Her sister yells as we run, “Stop! It’s me! Myah!” I couldn’t tell if Myah was happy to see her sister alive or in distress from the lack of memory that came with her. After a minute of high speed running we notice Cecilia slows down. Still covered by thick woods she comes to a stop completely, breathing heavily. We stop behind her, but far enough away in hopes we don’t frighten her. Grasping her head she starts pulling at her hair closest to her scalp. “You’ll go bald if you keep doing that.” Myah sighs, and shows a small smile. That seemed like a sisterly inside joke to me. After those words are spoken, Cecilia turns around, tears streaming from her eyes.

“Did I die?” Her voice cracks and the final word barely came out, but it was obvious she remembered us. Myah nods and rushes over to hold her sister. Tightly embracing each other they collapse on the floor, sobbing uncontrollably. Axel looks at me with a skeptical look. We step back from the girls and he turns me to face away while whispering:

“Did you do that?”

My brows furrowed in confusion, “Do what?”

“You can conjure things, at least that’s what we assume, did you conjure Cecilia back into existence?” The idea hadn’t crossed my mind, but Axel would be the only one thinking with a straight head at the moment - not having as much emotional connection to the situation.

“I don’t think I did? I can’t really tell when I’m using my power or not. Maybe it was an accident?” Axel looks over his shoulder at the girls,

“A miraculous one.”

Cecilia took some time to get back to the hideout, but somehow it felt like this is how it should have gone. She shouldn’t have been hurt in the process - her attempts to free her sister seemed well planned out and that bullet was definitely not from the military men.

“It was the Hacker.” Cecilia says as we sit on the creaky seats and tables.

“What was?” Myah questions,

“The one who shot that last gun. I was using those telekinetic powers to stop the bullets coming from one particular direction - this one came from higher up and at a very different starting point.” She explains. I feared she was right - which means he knows who we are, or at least there’s the possibility that he saw us.

“There’s another problem.” Myah sighs, “You and I have been made as Abnormals, we can’t go back to living a happy little life anymore.” Cecilia looks up at me, her eyes still big and shiny - just the way she was before.

“We could go see him?”

“CC, he said he’d never do it again.”

“I’m sure we can convince him. We should try.”

Confused, I ask, “What are you talking about?” Myah rolls her eyes as Cecilia answers,

“We know of an Abnormal that can go backwards in time. We just need to go back enough so that they don’t have footage of what we did.” I had more questions than answers. “Before you ask, we broke into a facility, stole some documents, and clearly we must have been caught on tape somewhere along the line.” Myah gasps,

“It was me. When I distracted the guard I used my powers to flick his switches to mute.” She looked devastated inside, I assume realising that her mistake cost her a sister.

“Well, without that tape, they can’t prove anything, but a better way to do it is to ask Mr. Peters to help us go backwards in time so that we don’t even have to go get it. We have that information now.”

“Mr. Peters?” Axel questions, “Why does that sound familiar?”

“He’s your principal.” Myah laughs.

“Principal P is an Abnormal?” He exclaims, “Although, I’m not really that surprised.” Sometimes it was hard to tell what he was thinking. “So, Cecilia, that means you have telekinesis?” She looks up at Axel and back at her sister, as if searching for approval.

Myah responds, “I think it’s best we don’t talk about what she can and can’t do. Just for now.” That made me incredibly curious. “It’s almost dark, we can leave soon for Mr. Peters’ house. Although I’m still not sure he’d help.” Myah continues to tell a story from when she was younger, when their mother had taken a three year old Cecilia to Mr Peters and begging to reverse time just enough. Apparently Cecilia swallowed something she wasn’t meant to and due to their mother’s abilities she knew Cecilia was to suffer a head trauma due to the injury. My guess was that their mother was able to predict the future in a way. There were parts of the story that didn’t add up - I assumed this was on purpose as the girls would hesitate before they continued. “Anyway, he turned back the clock enough to the moment just before CC swallowed the stupid rock, and the future was adjusted.”

“That doesn’t sound like a good thing. Sometimes things happen for a reason.” I say.

“Even though that’s true, if we didn’t, none of us would be here right now. My sister wouldn’t be alive, I probably would never have come to my powers the way I did, and you never would have met her. Yes, it’s risky, but it should still work out.” her words rang in my ears for a few moments while the others began to think of a plan to get to our principals home without being discovered. I remain silent during this process, still not sure what to think about this situation.

“Oh, this isn’t good.” Axel exclaims, checking his phone. “I have an alert, the police are looking for a fugitive with telekinetic abilities who may be able to identify a high-risk Abnormal known as a ‘Mimic’.” He looks confused and turns to Myah, “Do you know what a Mimic is?” He asks. She doesn’t show any reaction but simply states;

“I can’t think of anything relating to that, CC?” Myah looks towards her sister for a further response,

“Don’t look at me. I’m still having trouble remembering things.” It concerned me to hear this, for all I knew Cecilia couldn’t even remember our date, or the events that took place earlier today. Even though she might not have known what it was regarding, Cecilia could see the concern on my face. She stands, asking me to come outside with her while the others discussed a game plan.
