You Scared Me, Son

Sighing for the upteenth time, I followed the nurse to the ICU and true to her words, the little boy was throwing tantrums as he yelled for his mother. That was not good, it might lead to complications if he kept screaming.

I pushed open the door of the ward and saw the father trying to pacify the child. All the coldness and icy aura had all melted in the presence of his son. All that was on his face was helplessness.

I watched as his eyes only radiated love around the chubby angel. Just as I was thinking of what to do, the little boy raised his eyes and his emerald green orbs stared deep at me.

He squinted his eyes at me and his lips were pouted in an adorable pout. He blinked his eyes and the next thing everyone heard in the ward, including me, was his tiny voice, filled with happiness.

"Momma!"

His gaze never left mine. Was he calling me his mother?

What the hell!

This was such a weird situation, damnit! His eyes were boring through mine and those lips were wrapped up in a pout.

What an adorable child even when wrapped up in a bandage.

"Ha! Violet! Stop dreaming! You heard it wrongly!" I scolded myself.

As I was contemplating on what to say, I felt a scorching stare behind me and I turned to see a pair of eyes gazing through me. It was filled with anger and…confusion as it stopped at the boy.

Oops! I forgot he had a scary and arrogant father! But that wasn't the point as my brain began to register what the child was calling me.

Perhaps, I must have heard wrongly. He can't possibly mean it! I need to correct him as soon as possible.

I smiled at the little boy and was about to correct him, when the grumpy iceberg rushed towards us.

"Son, are you hurt anywhere? You scared me, son" He asked, kissing his chubby hands and cheeks.

So even this ill-mannered man can be so nice with words? It's good though that he loves his son.

I watched the little boy looking at his father. He must have seen the hurt in his dad's eyes because he looked down in guilt before raising his eyes again.

I saw something that almost blinded my eyes! That grumpy iceberg just smiled! Oh my gosh, he was so damn hot!

I was still lost in his smile when I heard the little boy reassuring his father," Daddy, I am fine. You don't have to feel sad. I am happy now that I have momma and you by my side. But I am feeling sleepy again."

"Then sleep, Son," the man said, patting his head. I saw him biting his lower lip as he tried to force out a smile.

I can tell he doesn't like it one bit that his son was referring to an unknown woman as his mother. Who would?

"Mummy, stay with me," the little boy said, holding my hand tightly.

His hands felt warm and it went straight to my heart, melting off all the anger I was feeling towards his father.

It was obvious I did not misheard him. He really did call me his mother. I was speechless. How could he even call me that when we had never met before?

I was just about to correct the little boy when I saw that he had slept off. I sighed softly and let him hold my hands till he was deeply asleep.

"Don't worry, Mister. He would snap out of it when he wakes up. It's one of the side effects of the surgery," I said and began to explain to him why he was likely that way.

But at the end of the five minute lecture, the only answer I got from him was a grunt. A grunt? Just a hmm!

Relax, Vee… he is just a patient and your patient's father. Think of the little chubby dumpling," I tried to cool my temper.

I was getting frustrated as if I was talking to a log of wood! Not wanting to spend one minute longer here, I slowly removed my hands from the sleeping boy and was about to leave when the iceberg finally uttered another word.

"Can he be discharged?" He asked, looking at his son.

I frowned. He can be discharged if everything was okay but he would need to have a doctor around him always and also take his pills regularly. He would also need to go for check up every two days. Isn't that stressful?

"Yes, he can be discharged but not right now. He needs to regain a little strenght. His vitals are okay. The only thing is for him to come for check-up regularly. I will be back for his next check-up. You can discharge him only if he can have access to a doctor all the time," I responded.

" That's not a problem. I want him discharged right now," he said, looking at me.

Was he trying to act deaf? Even if he was rich and can afford a doctor, the child still needs another five hours sleep!

" Like I said, sir. He would be discharged but that would be later when I come for his check up"

I didn't wait for him to say anything more before fleeing away from the ward. I held my pounding heart when I remembered everything that transpired just now and what the cute like dumpling just called me.

"I would love to be a mother to such a cute son but… your iceberg of a father is a no!" I said to herself, walking briskly to my office.

What a day!

Back in my office, I didn't know when I slept off. I was so tired that I just slumped down into a deep sleep. I was woken up by a knock on my door.

"Violet, you need to go and see your patient. His father wants him discharged right away or he will take the boy without permission," Nurse Abby said.

"You mean that iceberg?" I asked, yawning.

"Who?" She asked, confused.

"Nevermind, I will be right there," I said, dismissing her.

I didn't realize it was so late already. When I got to the ward, if looks could kill that iceberg would have killed me.

I ignored his glare and went to my patient who was still sleeping. He was still sedated. I checked on him and saw he was recovering well.

"He can be discharged but…"

"I wasn't deaf the first time. I just need your damn discharge papers. Leave the rest to my medical team," he said arrogantly.

I scoffed inside. Where was this medical team when the child almost died? All the same, they were relieving me off my duty earlier.

"How long will it take?" He asked, staring at me.

"I am done. You can leave…"

"I meant what happened earlier today," he corrected.

I frowned at his words. Then I remembered how the little dumpling had called me his mother earlier.

"Oh, that." I said, with a grinned. "He's just a little confused. That's all."

I wasn't expecting the boy to call me mom either and when he did, I had been too shocked to react appropriately.

It was completely normal for patients to wake up in a confused state for some hours but it would go away before the day ended.

I looked at iceberg and noticed he was looking a little pale. On impulse, I advised him to take his medication too but he snarled at me indirectly telling me to mind my business.

I just shrugged my shoulder instead, I had the feeling he would neglect his condition just to make sure his son was okay.

But it looked like I was just a busybody!

So much for trying to be a good doctor! I immediately shut my mouth instead and left the ward after giving them a clean sheet.

Work done and dusted! But I must say this had been the most hectic day since I became a doctor!
