The words hadn’t really registered with me. I sat there, blinking at him dumbly as a silence fell over the opulent room. The only sound was the faint noise of the Sunday morning traffic.

He wasn’t looking at me, instead staring out towards the window.

I wanted to ask him if I’d heard correctly, but I knew I had. He had said it as clear as he could. I didn’t pretend to know a lot about suicide, but you didn’t have to be an expert to know how devastating it could be for the people left behind. It made me look at the man before me in a new light. Not only had he lost his father in this way, but he’d then had to step up and take over the company. Had he even had time to grieve?

“Ezra…” I managed. “I am so sorry.”
