Shock

The ride home was painful, slow, and filled with fear, confusion, and trepidation.

The horrible image was always in her mind: the poor old woman lying on the asphalt, terribly injured and unconscious. Emanuele did not want to stay to see the rescue. In fact, even before an ambulance arrived, one of the passersby threw a tarp over the body.

Johnny stood pale beside her, holding her by the waist as they made their way back to the building. The idea was that they would spend the rest of the day away, but that couldn't wait.

How would Joshua react? Would he remember the nanny? The card with the number given minutes before weighed like lead in the girl's purse. Now he would never be able to call her again and find out what had happened between them.

But there was still one thing Emanuele could do. With or without Thabata in the apartment, with or without echoes of the nightmare appearing now and then to cloud her judgment.
