I lay awake, staring at the ceiling, as the hours crept by. My mind was restless, unable to shut off even for a moment. The darkness of the room felt stifling, and the sheets felt heavy on my body. The ticking of the clock seemed to get louder and louder as I tried in vain to fall asleep.

Finally, I gave up and decided to face the morning, watching as the sky turned from black to a deep blue, and then a lighter shade as the sun began to peek over the horizon.

I threw the covers off and got out of bed, padding barefoot across the cold floor to the window. I pulled the curtains aside and looked out into the predawn darkness, my breath fogging up the glass.

I pulled on a jacket and headed out into the crisp morning air, shivering slightly as the wind whipped through my hair. I could see the outline of the woods in the distance.
