Chapter 44

With a heavy bite on my quivering lips, I am acutely aware of the misstep in my words. Yet, Cameron remains unyielding, his steps closing in on me until my back meets the wall. "What did you just say?" he demands, but I know better than to repeat my folly.

My voice, barely a whisper, trembles with remorse. "I'm sorry," I manage to utter. "I shouldn't have said that, especially when you were defending me from the clutches of that chameleon-like woman."

Suddenly, he suggests, "Maybe you should find your own way to work," and without granting me a moment to protest, he turns on his heel and walks away.

In an instant, my hopes of sharing a ride with Cameron to work vanish into thin air. It's disheartening to think that I was actually looking forward to it, as it would have been the first time such a thing occurred, and he was the one who offered. But alas, I've squandered my chance through my own foolishness.
