Dante's POV Repeatedly, I ran my fingers through my hair as my mind darted like a trapped animal in a dozen different directions. I stared at Allison whose face was now as still and as immobile as a statue. She looked at me the way she had done when she first came here- suspiciously and distrustfully. Her earlier relaxed expression had disappeared the way a fist does when the palm opens. I fought with myself, forcing myself to assume an unreadable expression at least. Allison's POV It had been four hellish days- four days of constantly worrying about Darius. I could not remember being this disturbed in a long while except perhaps for the time Dante had gone to fight those rogues. But then I knew the worst within a few hours. This, however, was torture. To see my only living relative lying helpless was more than my nerves could stand. And to think it was silver that caused this damage! As yet, I had not gotten a satisfactory answer as to how Darius got that much silver into his system. I wrinkled my nose at the too-sterile smell of the pack clinic. Allison's POV The minute I caught sight of Dante, I flushed, embarrassed. I felt ashamed that he had been a witness to the whole sordid scene with my brother. Aria too was looking scandalized at all that Darius had said. It took all my willpower to keep my head up and stare at Dante. He did not look at me, however. His gaze was focused on Darius and the anger in his eyes was terrible to see. Darius must also have come to the same conclusion as I did, that this spelt trouble for him because he stiffened and cringed. Dante continued moving forward. Alison's POV It was early in the morning. The sun was not yet fully up, yet a fine sheen of sweat covered the guards and I. We had been running laps around the training ground for half an hour. I kept going, focusing on keeping my breathing even. One by one, the guards stopped running, tired out. I was the only one left. When I saw they had all stopped, I stopped running. Slowly, I walked to a tree and leaned against it, breathing heavily. The guards and warriors looked at me with admiration. Pleased with myself, I grinned. Dante's POV I looked around and had to admit that the dinner Allison had planned was a huge success. I was just getting to know that there were depths to my mate that I had not explored yet. To look at her, one would have thought that what she was only good at was fighting and training. Now, I was pleasantly surprised that she had the ability to run my home. As we had resumed the ritual of once more eating at the dining table, I felt somehow lighter. Since Madison's death, no one had had meals here and I had my reservations when Allison had made the suggestion. But I was now glad I had listened to her. Allison's POV I came awake. Vaguely, I was aware that I was lying on something soft- most likely a bed but I had the sensation of movement. I felt weak and lethargic. All I wanted to do at the moment was to keep lying there and probably go to sleep. I had no idea how long I had been out, so I forced my eyes open. Huge grey eyes fringed with thick lashes were inches from my face. Startled, I screamed, then realized it was Dante who was looking down at me. Dante winced at the shrill sound. Placing my hand on my chest, I said, "You scared me, Dante. Why were you staring at me like that? That close, I thought you were a monster or something." She hesitated on the doorstep and the expression on her face changed to alarm as soon as she caught sight of our faces. I got on my feet at once. A part of me hoped that she had not noticed anything. Allison's POV I sat on my bed pondering on the fact that it had been one hellish week since Dante had told me about the pack war. This period had been the most grueling of my entire life. A part of me wished that Dante had gone already to fight this damned war. If he had done so, then at least I would be free of the agony of not knowing what the outcome would be. I glanced at my still-flat stomach and absentmindedly stroked it. Being pregnant at this time did not help either. My hormones were all over the place and to my disgust, I was always inclined to cry. Fate had certainly played Dante and I a cruel trick. Just when I had gotten the best news of my life- news that I was going to be a mother and bear the child of the only man I had ever loved- that happiness had been cut short by this war.
