Chapter Forty: A LESSON WELL TAUGHT

Mr. Smith moved away from me but his eyes not leaving mine. The steel seat was growing uncomfortable and the chains my hands and feet were bound with were growing unbearable.

The nurse had suggested he not use the silver chains, for my baby's sake. He for some reason obliged.

My back was numb from the whip and the pain surging through my entire being was excruciating. The snarl on his face stung. He had no heart at all.
