40. HeartBeat

The walk back was quiet, neither of us spoke. It was the kind of peaceful silence you shared with close friends, the kind you didn’t need words to speak because you’re certain they already know the contents of your heart.

He held my hands as we walked, occasionally rubbing his thumb over my hand. I made it my duty to step on every dry leaf on my path because the crunchy sound brought me an odd sense of relief. Gwaine stole glances at me, smiling at my level of childishness.

The cold wind made me shiver a little and although I tried to hide my discomfort, Gwaine was quick to notice.

“Are you cold?” He asked, his eyes finding mine in the dark. I nodded in acknowledgment and he removed his jacked and placed it over my shoulders. His scent was all over that piece of clothing and I pulled it closer, inhaling deeply as a smile formed at the corner of my lips.

“Thank you.” I said. He nodded, picking my hand and placing it back in his. We were almost home when my feet suddenly started hurting
