Scarlett’s POV

My heart skipped a beat, and relief washed over me as the commanding voice rang out. It wasn't the guards who had been discussing their sinister plans, but someone of higher authority. I strained my ears to catch the ensuing conversation, hoping it would provide a window of opportunity for my escape.

"What are you two doing outside your assigned post?" the voice boomed with authority.

The guards stumbled over their words, their voices filled with trepidation. "We... We were just conducting a routine patrol, sir," one of them stammered, desperately trying to come up with an excuse.

The voice grew stern, tinged with anger. "Routine patrol? During these crucial times? You two should know better! Get back to your assigned positions immediately!"
