Double Shock

I had kept hurrying my nurse to finish my dressing so that I could go see Anne. She’d been sleeping for hours straight.

I was mad at myself for not seeing the signs. Something was wrong with Anne. Something she wasn’t ready to spill. It might be the cause of her ill health, or probably, it's a flu she might have contracted from the hospital. Whichever the case, I was to be blamed.

She had sacrificed so much to make sure I recovered quickly, yet I couldn’t tell that something was weighing her down. Nor could I tell that she was so sick to have fainted in the kitchen. I couldn’t even catch her, although I tried. But the pain that shot through my leg when I dashed for her, sent me on all fours. I was useless. A total wuss in all ramifications. I couldn’t even tell her how I felt all this while. When I’d wanted to, I got into an accident. It was as if the universe was against me.

“Nurse, make it snappy!” I said irritably.

The lady gave me a stern look and continued at her own p
