Stubborn and independent

Roman laughed awkwardly, his eyebrows furrowing together. He remembered how upset she used to get whenever he called his dad or brother to complain about her life.

It seemed as though he didn't realize how important his father had been until now. She had probably never told him that she missed her husband because he was working overseas and she hardly ever saw him, but she still cared about him greatly.

"Well, maybe I should come by more often," he offered with a small smile.

"Roman, honey," she sighed, "do you remember that promise that I made when I first met you? The one where I promised to give you a better family?"

He gulped nervously, remembering the words his mother had said. She had promised to give him a family, but he wasn't sure if he deserved it.

He had lied to her about his relationship status and lied to her about his feelings towards her and he was still unsure if he could trust her enough to start loving her back.
