I flew up from my bed with a start, my heart racing frantically as I began to dial his line to no avail.

It rang continuously, but it was either he had dropped his phone elsewhere, he was asleep, or he was intentionally refusing to pick up my call.

My palms became sweaty as I thought about his threats earlier and his subtle remarks when he warned me not to push Max's case so much.
