I stepped outside and spotted K.P. leaning against his car. The passenger door already open, while he waited for me. Ankles crossed and on arm crossed over his belly while he twisted a toothpick between his lips.

“Took ya long enough.” He rolled off the car to walk to the driver’s side.

I climbed in and pulled the door closed. “Where are we going?”

“You tell me.”

“Go to the park on the far side of town.”

“Whatever you say, Cheers.”

We pulled up and I noticed that as usual it was abandoned.

Everyone is at Jake’s party.

I caught his hand and led him to a bypass at the far end of the park. I had him hoist me up and he warily climbed a few bricks to join me atop the retaining wall. Where he had to duck his head to walk beneath a few iron beams toward the center.

“What is this place?”

“I come here sometimes, to be alone.”

“Interesting place.”

When we got to the middle the wall dipped behind a pillar making a convenient hollow there that was invisible to people below.
