TWENTY SEVEN – BREAKING DOWN WALLS

“Officer, Mira, you both can take your seats now.”

There’s something that isn’t quite right here. I can’t seem to put my finger on it, but I know something is seriously wrong somewhere.

Devon takes his seat, those electric blue eyes lingering firmly on my face before they slide away when I raise one curious brow at him.

“How’s Dutch?” I ask casually.

Something dark crosses Mason’s eyes. It is gone so quickly, I assure myself I was imagining it. Mason might be a pro at keeping things secret, but his brother is an entirely different story.

The darkness which just disappeared in Mason’s eyes festers in Devon’s, displaying pain and grief to anyone in the room who would care to notice. And I do notice.

“I asked a question.” I insist when no one answers me. “How’s Dutch?”

“He’s fine.” Mason says hurriedly. “Probably enjoying Hawaii as we speak.”

Is it just me or does mockery and accusation accompany Mason’s tone?

I focus my attention on Devon but he hurriedly looks away, concentrati
