I did not like the idea of staying in a vampire’s home for the evening, but the journey back was unquestionable, and I felt the unquenchable urge to shower off the rank air of the brothel.

The sounds coming from that place still burned in the back of my head.

I found Adrian awaiting me in the room Lord Mueller had arranged for us. He had been looking terribly bored when I arrived. Now he was crossing his arms, staring at me aghast.

“You went to a brothel?”

“For an investigation,” I explained, already knowing what would come out of his mouth next.

“And you didn’t invite me?”

I ignored Adrian and took a seat on the sofa. The ring he had found was burning a hole in my pocket, and I took it out to admire the stone. Whoever the wizard was, he must’ve left in a hurry. A ring of this importance would never have been left behind on purpose.

I turned the ring on its side and small engravings sheened on the surface. Tiny etches of letters in an alphabet I did not recognize. Perhaps so
