A painful goodbye

They took Liam back to the packhouse, where Henry tried to heal him. But it turned out that his injuries were so severe that even a powerful werewolf like Henry could not heal him.

He was feverish and remained unconscious throughout treatment. Sophia did not leave his side and stayed by his bedside all night, using damp towels to try and bring his fever down.

She was still awake when Eleanor came into the room in the morning. Her eyes were bloodshot and had dark circles beneath them from lack of sleep.

She did not notice Eleanor walking into the room until the latter put a hand on her shoulder and squeezed gently. “How is he?”

Sophia shook her head slightly. “The same.”

“You should eat something and get some sleep,” Eleanor told her. “I’ll watch him.”

Sophia reached forward and smoothed her brother’s hair back. He was no longer crying or whimpering in pain, but his face was flushed from the fever.

“Okay,” she said, getting up from her seat. “Thank you.”
