Chapter 13: Anger

The next day, Emma was awakened by the ringing phone. She picked it up, her eyes still lazy and unfocused.

"Laura, could you make breakfast for Director David today?"

Before Emma could reply, the caller abruptly hung up. She was about to go back to sleep when the phone rang again.

"Emma, about last night... did you get home safely?"

This voice made her fully awake. Emma sat up, looked at the phone screen, and began to calm down.

"I got home on my own."

"Last night... I think I drank a bit too much."

Emma chuckled to herself; Mark had called her early in the morning, indicating he was quite alarmed. Emma's plan had thrown his off track.

"Yeah, you got pretty drunk last night. I had someone take you back to the hotel."

Mark became even more worried upon hearing this. He couldn’t understand why he had gotten so drunk. He recalled not drinking that much last night. Emma knew he was very confused, so she added more detail.

"Don't you remember? You kept drinking bottle after bottle of wine. I tried to stop you, but you just kept going, so you got drunk."

"Really?"

"What did you think happened?"

Mark rubbed his aching head as he woke up to find Lily lying beside him. He remembered putting a drug in Emma's drink last night, but he had no idea how he ended up like this. Finally, Mark called Emma, who spoke as if nothing unusual had happened.

"No, I'm just feeling a bit of a headache. As long as you got home safely, that's fine."

"Okay, get some rest. I'm off to work now."

Emma exchanged a few more words before hanging up, satisfied as she looked at the photo she had received. The photo showed Lily coming out of Mark's room, her clothes disheveled and far from her usual glamorous actress demeanor.

The phone beeped, signaling a new message, but the next moment, Emma's expression darkened, not wanting to reply. Furious, she threw her phone onto the bed.

Mark opened his eyes early in the morning to find a girl beside him, and he was delighted, thinking it was Emma. He wrapped his arm around her shoulder, only to find her face revealed before him.

"Lily, what are you doing here?"

The girl had been tormented all night and was extremely exhausted, but upon hearing Mark's loud voice, she slowly opened her eyes.

"You're awake?"

Lily sat up, and Mark angrily shoved her back onto the bed.

"What are you doing here?"

Mark's face was filled with anger as he interrogated Lily, who had no clue what was going on.

"You texted me to come over."

Only then did Mark calm down, quickly grabbing his phone. It turned out he had indeed messaged Lily to come.

"You texted me, and I dropped everything to be here. Is this how you treat me?"

Lily's voice grew soft and seductive as she moved closer to Mark, pressing her body against him. But Mark didn't care. What he was focused on now was where Emma was and whether she knew he had slept with another woman.

"Get out."

Mark showed no sympathy as he pushed Lily away. He looked at her with a stern face and then snapped.

"Now."

His expression made Lily a bit scared. She quickly stood up, hastily put on her clothes, and hurried out of the room. Mark then went to shower and called Emma.

Emma was currently frowning as she held breakfast for David. Mark had called her early in the morning, which put her in a bad mood, and Secretary Ren also called, asking her to get breakfast for David. Emma was a high-society young lady who didn't know how to cook. Despite her laziness, she still had to go buy porridge for David's breakfast.

"Damn you, David, why don't you just starve? I haven't even eaten yet, and I have to buy you food."

Emma held the porridge in her hand, mumbling curses about David under her breath. This was all David's plan to make things difficult for her, hoping she'd quit the secretary position.

After calling Emma, Mark heard her say that he was drunk last night but still didn’t quite believe it. From the way she spoke, he assumed that she didn’t know about him sleeping with another woman.

"Let me see the hotel’s surveillance cameras."

Mark was the owner of this hotel, so checking the cameras was no problem. He was worried Emma might suspect something, so he came to delete any evidence. He reviewed the footage and saw a clip of Lily entering his room, which he promptly erased. As for what happened at the restaurant, Mark couldn't do much, as their security system wasn’t as easily accessible.

After reviewing the footage, he confirmed what Emma had said: she had brought him to the hotel and then immediately left. Finally, he breathed a sigh of relief, making sure that Emma wouldn't find out about any of this.

Emma entered David's office and placed the box of porridge she had bought on his desk. As she turned around, she bumped into someone.

“Trying to hug me?”

David stood in front of Emma, his face expressionless as he looked at her. Emma was annoyed by his comment and wanted to snap back at him but kept her cool.

“I brought you some porridge, and you were standing behind me without saying anything, which is why I got startled and bumped into you.”

David turned around to sit at his desk, picked up the box of porridge, and then pushed it back towards Emma.

“It doesn't seem hot.”

Emma picked up the box—it was still hot. She felt a surge of frustration because David had appeared behind her, causing her to bump into him, yet he didn't even apologize. Now he was complaining.

“It’s still hot.”

“Go heat it up for me.”

David casually gave the order, and Emma nodded and turned to leave.

“Wait, make me a cup of coffee, too.”

“Okay.”

Emma hadn’t done any work since she arrived at the company, and she was already tasked with heating up the porridge and making coffee. She went to reheat the porridge and prepare a coffee, then brought them back to David’s office and placed them on his desk.

“Here’s your coffee.”

“Did you finish your work yesterday?”

“I did.”

David, who was engrossed in his phone, stopped what he was doing, surprised that she had completed it.

“Then bring it to me for review.”

“Sure.”

Emma walked out and punched her desk hard, startling Secretary Ren.

“Sorry, just practicing my punching.”

Secretary Ren gave a nervous smile and went back to work. David took a sip of his coffee and then spat it out immediately.

“This is coffee?”

He stared at the cup in his hand, suspecting something was off. The coffee tasted salty—really salty. After venting her frustration, Emma gathered the documents she had completed the previous night and placed them on David's desk.

“This is everything.”

Emma had stayed up almost all night to get all the documents done. David glanced at the papers and could tell they were well-organized; he shouldn't have underestimated her skills.

“What did you put in this?”

David couldn't find fault with the documents, so he turned his attention to the coffee and questioned her.

“I made coffee and added sugar.”

“Are you sure you added sugar?”

David knew Emma had done this on purpose. Emma maintained an innocent expression as if she had no idea what was going on.

“Is there something wrong?”

“It’s salty.”

“Maybe I accidentally added salt instead of sugar.”

Emma gave David a cheeky smile. Although he was quite angry, there was nothing he could do about it. The girl in front of him wore thick glasses and had a face full of freckles, so he couldn’t really argue with her.

“Get out.”

“Want me to make you another one?”

“No, thanks.”

David immediately refused. As soon as Emma left the office, she couldn't stop laughing. She had finally managed to annoy David successfully. She knew he wouldn’t like a girl who wasn’t attractive. Now, she was working there under the name Laura, and with her unattractive appearance, he would have no interest in her.
