Chapter 38: The mark

“Another woman was murdered yesterday night,” Harold confessed before raising his head to meet the king's eyes.

“The body?” Rayne inquired, wanting to know where the corpse was.

“It’s in the morgue, your highness. I moved the corpse there this morning.” Harold confirmed.

“Then we have to speed up, and it seems I won't be staying long to celebrate the Queen's birthday.” Rayne said, pausing, “What about them? Have they improved?” Rayne asked, his demeanor changing because he knew the ministers would soon come to the palace to demand what he had been doing to curb the killing of the people.

“They are ready. I just told them to wait for you."

“Pick the best ten out of them and let them meet me outside the gate at night,” Rayne said sternly as he began to walk towards the field.

“It is done, Your Highness,” Harold replied, walking by the king's side.
