With a sigh, I push myself out of bed and put on my clothes. Given how feral Elijah can be in bed, I’m glad that my clothes are intact. He used to rip off my clothes during our marriage and promised to buy me new ones. He kept his promise. And I used to love that. It made me happy knowing that he wanted me, even if it was just for my body.

The memory makes my chest feel heavy. No, don’t doubt it. That was a different time.

As I step out of the room and walk down the stairs, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee tickles my nose. Maria bustles around the kitchen, barking orders at the two maids who have returned to their duties today.
