What if I break a promise?

Cassi's POV

I let out a slight grimace as I looked away from the window. I then turned to look at my Mom who was still struggling with her melted ice cream. I decided to ask a question.

"What do you think about promises? Are we allowed to break them?" I asked, holding my breath as I awaited an answer from my Mom. I knew my Mom was starting to suspect what was going on with me.

But then my Mom wouldn't know the main issue if she didn't say anything.

"Uhmm, I would say promises are easy to make but they are hard to keep. Also, there are times promises need to be broken. Those are desperate times." Theodora answered fluently. Her tone showed she had gone through a lot.

"What? Did you make a promise with anyone. A male friend, perhaps?" My Mom asked playfully, wiggling her brows.

"No, I did not." I replied immediately. How could I do what my Mom was implying when my so-called mate hated me.

"Oh, really? Then what are you on about? From your questions, did you make a promise to your parents?" My Mom asked curiously. She tried to guess what I might be thinking.

"No, Mom, I didn't make a promise of any sort to my parents," I lied. I remembered I did and was just lying. I remembered promising them that I would never leave no matter what happens in the future some years back, only if I knew they were making me promise not to leave them when I eventually find out the truth.

"I'm just curious about a lot of things. I think you can satisfy my curiosity." I said with a wink.

"Ohh, you think so?" My Mom replied with a smirk. And then her face turned serious,

"If you need to talk to me about anything, you know how to ask but then I suspect that you're keeping something away from me." My Mom tried to probe again.

"You can always see through me, Mom. So I don't think I can hide anything from you..." I appeased her with those words.

"So, if anything is wrong with me, I don't need to waste so much energy to hide it. You will always know about it." I sweet talked my Mom into believing that I was alright.

"Alright, then." My Mom answered. "We will be at the garden soon. I'm sorry, I did not inform you that it is a little far from the house. You have sat down for so long." She tried to apologize as she checked her wrist watch.

We had been driving for almost two hours.

"It's nothing, Mom. I can sit down for long hours." I said, grinning.

This means a lot to me, so why would I complain about something so simple as sitting.

My Mom grinned as well, patting my back.

"You should rest, we will be there in thirty minutes." She assured me.

Nodding her head, I closed her eyes and leaned against the headrest. My face was calm, showing off my beauty but I was in great turmoil.

I started to think about My Mom's words.

I had made a promise to my parents and I didn't want to break that promise but sadly I have to.

It was difficult but I knew a time would come and I would have to let out her worries.

My Mom was willing to be an outlet and I was ever grateful for that.

"Can I ask one more question, Mom?" I opened my eyes and asked, though I knew I could go ahead and ask any question.

"Sure, I like that you are so curious today." My Mom replied, ever ready to answer my question.

"What if I break a promise? Will the other person involved feel bad about it?" I asked my question a bit silly.

It seemed my turmoil didn't let me think well.

"Wow..." My Mom let out one word. She was a bit surprised and amazed at my question.

'What's wrong with her?' I know she would think to herself.

"Well, from common sense breaking a promise will make the other person feel bad." My Mom began and my face turned red in embarrassment.

"But then, like I said earlier, you should know when to break promises especially when it goes against your own convenience and safety." My Mom concluded her words with a smile.

"I understand, Mom. I won't take any more of your time." I said sheepishly and the car turned silent. I then decided to take the disturbing thoughts that clouded my mind off.

She didn't want to walk into the garden with a sour mood and ruin our plan. I let out a deep sigh which caused my Mom to look at me but I didn't pay any heed to her.

Soon, we drove into the parking lot of the large garden. Just a few cars could be seen there and I was happy that there were only a few people in the garden.

I was quick to get out of the car and then walked elegantly toward the other side. I helped my Mom out of the car gently and took her by the hand.

A staff of the garden was seen standing by the car, ready to help us navigate our way through the garden. It was a big day for me.

As we walked, we started to see different species of plants and flowers planted all over. "Do you think it's beautiful?" My Mom asked, in an elegant low tone.

On the other hand, I had a big smile on my face, as I turned to look at my Mom. "It's beautiful, I like it."

The genuine smile on my face made my Mom's heart warm. She didn't want anything else than to see me smile, I guessed.

The staff took us around the colorful garden, carefully explaining to them every species of plants and flowers seen at the garden.

I was incredibly fascinated by what I was seeing. I could spot a few people in the garden, watering plants and planting new ones. My eyes were glued to how the seeds were placed and how it was done.

My Mom, who had her eyes on me, suddenly asked, "Would you like to try planting a few seeds? I see you're fascinated by the process."

"Oh, yes, I would love to." I was quick to jump on the opportunity. The staff on the other hand, let out a light chuckle seeing how eager I was.

"Follow me..." The staff gestured respectfully.

He was quick to get a few seeds, and some gardening tools.

I suddenly turned nervous as we approached the layer of soil for the planting.

The staff gave a cool vibe and said, "You don't need to get nervous, ma'am. It's incredibly easy and I'll guide you through the whole process."

I nodded her head gratefully. This was one of the days where I wished I didn't wear such high heels. If I had worn a flat shoe, I would be able to navigate my way freely in the garden.

But then I looked around and I could see people dressed to the nines walking around. I decided I was way better and more comfortable.

"The first thing you need to do is know the proper depth in which you need to sow." The staff started, instructing me to dig at a certain depth. When that was done, I let out a light huff.

My ankles were starting to ache but I wasn't willing to stop. I was so into what I was doing.

"Secondly, you should pay attention to the seed spacing." The staff said, handing me a few seeds. I followed his instruction to the latter.

"Now, lay and plant the seeds in defined rows since you're a beginner." The staff dished out another instruction and I was quick to follow.

My Mom who was standing on the other side of the layer, was also fascinated by what she was seeing.

Though I was already covered in sweat, I could see how happy I was. It was evidence that her efforts to bring me here weren't in vain.

"Now, the next step is to cover the seeds and then firm the soil. I'm sure this would be the most playful part for you." The staff encouraged me.

True to his words, I enjoyed covering up the seeds. I started to play around with the soil until I thought that I was okay with my playful banters.

I let out a tired huff as the staff dished out the rest of the rest of the instructions, from watering the seeds gently, and not allowing the soil not to crust.

After ten minutes, we were done with planting and I made a decision to get back from time to time to check how the plant would grow.

As soon as I got myself clean, I rushed forward and put myself in my Mom's arms.

"Thank you, Mom, I had a lot of fun today." I said with a happy smile on my face.

My Mom, on the other hand, had a satisfied smile on her face. "Are you ready to go home? I'm sure you're dying to take off those heels." My Mom said and I nodded sheepishly.

"Before then, let's head to the place I had always been coming to pray for your safety and come back to the other part of the garden," She said and took my hand.
