Chapter eleven

"Mom! What are you doing here?!" My son, Hilton yelled in surprised.

"I am here to stop you from making the worst mistake of your life." I replied.

"Madam please calm down." Dave's mother said.

"Stay out of this woman." I said to her.

"Hilton, I will not stand aside and watch you ruin your future with this woman's son. Go home now!" I said in anger.

"Please leave. You can't just come into someone's house and start laying insults." Dave's mom said to me.

"Yes. I am leaving. And I am doing so with my son! I won't leave him here with your distraction of a son." I said.

"Get out!" She replied.

"Please mom let's just go. Please stop saying hurtful things to her. I'm tired of hearing all that. Please." Hilton begged.

"Let's go son. I've had enough of this stinky place." I said and dragged my son out.

This won't be the last she'd hear of me.

Anna POV

Oh God why? Why must I be shamed in this manner? This isn't the way things were for me and my son. We use to live a better life. But now that I am a widow I have nothing else but my son. He is my only reason to hold on to life. God tell me why, why did you take my husband from me?

I cried and cried so heavily after Hilton and his mother left.

There is one thing I'm very thankful to God for. And that is, for giving me a caring and hardworking son like Dave, that's for sure.

Dave POV

I'm suddenly having a sharp headache. What's wrong with me? Whatever it was, it's sure giving me a hard time right now. I just don't get it.

I've been working my butt off today. Mr Adams seemed to be very busy today.

"Dave!" Mr Adams yelled.

"Take this." He said, handing me some money.

I collected the money from him.

"Go and get me some blank sheets. I'm all out here." He said.

I went to the part of the company selling blank sheets and I got them.

I went back to Mr Adams' office and this time there was someone else there.

He looks like a boy my age.

I gave Mr Adams the papers and was about to leave when Mr Adams still called me back.

"Listen to what this boy has to say." Mr Adams told me.

"You can speak now. I'm listening." Mr Adams said to the boy.

"Sir. I came here to resume my work. I was only sick all these days I was absent." The boy said.

"Really? And who did you take permission from?" Mr Adams asked.

"No one sir. I'm sorry sir. I was only sick." The boy pleaded on his knees.

"Stand up Henry. I forgive you." Mr Adams said.

So his name is Henry? I wonder what his job was.

"Oh thank you sir. I will resume work immediately." Henry replied.

"I never said you would still continue working here. You are too lazy and ignorant. You have been replaced with someone else. And he is standing right next to you." Mr Adams said.

"Please sir. Don't take my job from me." Henry begged.

"It's never been yours since the day you stopped working hard and become lazy." Mr Adams said.

"But please sir." Henry said.

"The exit is that way." Mr Adams replied.

Henry walked towards the door but then turned his face to look at me before finally leaving.

Henry seemed to have a hidden agenda but I didn't let him get to me.

"I hope you learned from what just happened. Don't ever slack at your job or else, you'll get fired." Mr Adams said and I nodded.

"You may leave now." Mr Adams said.

"Yes sir. I replied and left his office.

That was a close one. I was scared back there. It was almost as if Mr Adams was indirectly showing me what he would do to me in future. I'm glad that's over.

"Ha ha ha." I heard someone laugh and it was Mr Charles.

"He frightened you didn't he?" Mr Charles said and laughed again.

I didn't know how to respond or what to say.

"Don't worry about it. That's the way Mr Adams works. He always fires people harshly in front of their replacement so that the replacement doesn't make the same mistake as the other did." Mr Charles said.

"Can I ask you a question?" I said.

"Sure. You can." He said.

"Has Mr Adams ever done it to you in the past?" I asked.

"No. We are actually best friends. We started work here together before he got promoted to being boss. It's just that our work took all the time we use to have for each other." He replied.

"Okay." I replied.

What Mr Charles said reminded me of my best friend Hilton. We use to spend almost the whole day with each other but ever since I got this job things changed.

Mr Adams POV

I really like that boy. I just hope he doesn't turn out like the rest.

My phone ringed and I picked the call.

"Hello Johnson." I said.

"Hello my friend. How are you doing? He asked.

" I'm good and you?" I replied.

"Never been better." He replied.

"I called to ask about your progress. Have you gotten that hot lady yet?" He asked.

"Not yet but I... " I replied.

"I knew you couldn't do it. You don't have the guts to approach her." He cut me off.

"Yes I can. I'll show you that I've still got it." I replied.

"How about we make it a bet then?" Five hundred thousand for you if you do it and five hundred thousand for me if you chicken out." He said.

"It's on." I replied.

"There's a time limit." He added.

"And what's that?" I asked.

"You have one week to do it." He replied.

"That's no big deal." I said.

"One more thing." He said.

"Okay." I said.

"You can't just come and tell me you've done it. You have to bring proof of it." He said.

"Okay. No problem. I replied.

We both spoke about other things and then ended the call. I called Dave and told him that the house I offered to give him will have to wait till the next week.

I have to get that woman. What ever means necessary. I will start search for her tomorrow.
