A Surreptitious Farewell

I tossed and turned in my sleep till it was dawn. I woke up several times in the night cos my mind was in turmoil. The thought that I was about to run away from home to a city where I knew no one greatly troubled me.

At dawn, my alarm clock went off and I jolted from my sleep. I reached out and stopped it. I lay on the bed and stared at the ceiling as the thought of my running away from home filled my heart.

I was born and bred in Montgomery and I have never been to another city in the US, let alone other countries. All my life, I have been protected by my parents and of course my brother. They made sure I never went far from the vicinity of the mansion and the packhouse.

Although I have always longed to travel outside Montgomery and visit other cities, I never had the opportunity.

A couple of times I told my parents and Martin that I want to see other cities, but they vehemently refused and said that I'm too young to travel alone to other cities in the US
