CHAPTER 58

KRISTINA'S POV

They stepped past us and exited the building, shutting the door behind them. He turned back toward me and pulled one of the chairs from beside my table out for himself. He sat down across from me, looking me dead in the eye.

"So you're Kristina?" he asked, tilting his head as though appraising me.

His voice sounded gruff and masculine, like he was accustomed to getting his way with people. There was something cold and calculating about him that I didn't trust at all.

"W-why?"

"That's interesting. You're a lot different than I expected. What is your last name?"

"I... um..." I stuttered, trying to come up with an explanation for why I looked like that.

It seemed like I couldn't even answer basic questions without stumbling over myself or making some other stupid mistake. But I really needed help.

"It's uh... Kris–I mean, Kristina," I stammered, still unsure what else to say.

I felt embarrassed by the fact that I hadn't given him my full name. Maybe I'd assumed that
