Melissa linked arms with Sean. "Let's go, honey."

She dragged Sean away from Angeline's table and to their own. Then, she apologized for the impromptu show she'd just put on. "Did I just mess things up, Shane?"

"What were you trying to get out of her?" Sean looked down at the menu, his tone bland and indifferent. "Are you pleased with whatever you got?"

She tightened her grip on the menu. "I wasn't trying to do anything, Shane. I was just… I just wanted to help you talk sense into her!"

Even Melissa herself wasn't convinced by that lie. Feeling diffident, she fell silent and bit her lip.

"You're my family, Melissa. If you have anything to ask, you can just be frank with me." Sean looked up at her with a smile. "I'll tell you everything that I can."

Melissa almost blurted out a question about his relationship with Angeline. But she shook her head when she thought about Angeline's attitude and the mess she'd potentially caused with her stupid test.

"I won't do it again, Shane." Me
