CHAPTER FORTY-TWO

She stared at me, her smiles fading as my words settled in. Her lips trembled, but no words escaped them as her eyes shifted to the water below. Before she averted her gaze, I caught a glimpse of tears welling up.

Suddenly, she let out a short chuckle. “Did I really say that?” she questioned, laughing nervously as she hastily wiped away the tears that threatened to stream down her cheeks. “I must be high on crack… How could I fall in love with you?” Her attempt at humor thinly veiled the vulnerability that lingered beneath the surface.

"Are you okay?" I inquired, studying her closely. This sudden change in her demeanor was unusual, and although she tried to mask it, there was an evident shift in her behavior.

I found myself wondering whether my words had hurt her or if she genuinely meant what she said. Hoping for the latter as it would bring relief, I acknowledged that if she was genuinely hurt, then she had good acting skills to be able to hide it.
