Chapter 59

His tone is hard, and there’s a warning to it. He rubs his thumb along my arm, holding me close to him as she stands there gaping at us.

“Your what?” she finally sputters.

“My fiancée. Ella and I will be getting married very soon.” I can hear the laughter in his voice when he adds, “Play your cards right and you might get an invitation to the wedding.”

Christine is so mad she’s fuming, and without a word, she storms back to her SUV and peels out of the driveway.

“That woman has a lot of anger in her,” I say, watching her disappear around the turn in the drive.

“I’m sorry she was rude to you. It won’t happen again.” He grabs my hand as we walk back to the house. “We need to tell your parents as soon as they get back. She’ll have this spread around town in about 20 minutes, I imagine. It’s better they hear it from us.”

“Okay,” I agree, wondering how my parents will take the news. They’ll just have to get used to it, I think, because there’s no way in hell I’m leaving.
