‘You deserve better…..’

“If you didn’t want to marry me that much then you shouldn’t have”. I croaked.

He shook his head.

“Was I to go against my father?”. He asked me. “Was I to know that you would expect love and roses from a marriage of convenience?”.

He was right, but I couldn’t blame myself, I was young and he was everything a girl could fantasize about, it wasn’t my fault if I couldn’t help how I fell about him.

“My father was everything to me, and he wanted me to marry you, and so I did”. He said to me.

I nodded. I understood that, and I understood that he had left the woman he truly loved to marry me, I understood that that was why he had been so cold and distant, but I could never understand why he would go as far as being unwell for so long and not telling anyone about it.

“Was it serious?”. I asked him after a long moment of heated silence. I knew it had to have been serious to have kept him away for so long, I just wanted him to say it, I wanted him to confirm.
