33. The Chase

Scar's pov

I was terrified I might never see her again, never get to hold her close or feel her lips against mine. The thought filled me with dread, but thankfully she was alright.

She leaned on me for support and when I apologized, confusion clouded her eyes.

"Why?" Her question rang in my ears, yet I had no answer.

I knew in my heart I wasn't to blame for her suffering, but I still felt compelled to apologize for not being there when she needed me.

"It wasn't your fault," she said softly. "I'm the one who went too far when you asked me to stop. I turned our mission into a reckless game. I'm so sorry."

She lowered her head in shame, and it pained me to see her blame herself for everything.

"You don't need to feel that way," I said gently. "I enjoyed playing the hero coming to a princess's rescue. I could hear you calling my name from afar."
