I’d lost her, the bright red convertible of my wife’s car, between the sardine of cars that wove in between us on the highway.

“God-fucking-dammit!” I bellowed, slamming my hands on the steering wheel and gritting my teeth as panic wove through my eyelids until my vision was a pinhole of primly tarred lots and neon lights.

Where the hell had Darlene disappeared to? Had she known I was following her?

“No,” I shook my head, I had been careful to make sure I stayed out of sight, inching forward just enough to keep her in my periphery, until she vanished.

I rumbled the matte black wagon to a slow crawl, letting my eyes scan the dense lot of the side streets, doing a double take when I spotted the lime green BMW of my brother’s car.

“Frederick?” I rasped huskily, glancing at the blinking gold cursive of the digital clock and feeling the frown lines on my forehead deepen.
