I felt like a feather as we drove off in silence after we left Nancy and Nigel’s house. I was happy to be around them for once, something very rare for me. I have always tried to avoid even the smallest gatherings my mother had with her friends like the plague but today I had a great time. They didn’t ask any more questions that I could not answer. They were not pushy but understanding and great company that I would do it again soon. In fact, I can’t wait to have lunch or dinner with them again sometime.

A new wave of sadness washed over me as my smile faded because I thought of my brother. I would do anything to see him again and I was sure he was watching me from a distance. I could feel it and every time I looked back or stopped to see it was as if he was closer. I began imagining Adam and my biological parents sitting together having a meal. I closed my eyes leaning on the window trying to reign in tears that were threatening to come out.

“You okay there babe?” James asked
