John's POV

The silent room reflected the lackluster atmosphere between Cassie and me.

Sitting on the bed in her room while I waited for her to finish getting ready, I observed every point of the place that had once been the territory of incredible nights between the two of us, happy moments that were now only fragments of a relationship that had once been pleasurable.

How had we come to this?

What was my share of the blame in this frayed relationship?

It is difficult to realize that you no longer feel the same way about someone who was once so much a part of your life.

I felt a great deal of affection for Cassie, but it didn't seem to be enough to carry through a relationship, because this affection was only in recognition and gratitude for everything we had been through over the years. Maybe I should continue to live my life as I have always lived it in order to avoid possible conflicts, but this is what scares me the most. Being unhappy.
