“Andrei.” Just hearing that name come out of her lips weakens my resolve.

“Say that again.” Hoping that I heard it wrong the first time, I beckon her to say the name of the man whose blood runs in her veins.

“We used Andrei’s blood.” With the unmistakable worry in her eyes, she mutters a sentence I never, in my life, thought I’d hear.

“What the flying fuck? John was there, another hybrid. You said, John has hybrid friends living nearby, too. So you have a lot of options, many others who could have provided you what you need from the hybrids. But you had to use Andrei’s blood?” My voice trembles and my fists clench wanting to tear apart something.

“We didn’t plan it like that. I was very ill, John grabbed a syringe, drew blood from Andrei and injected it in me. It was done and gone in less than two minutes, before I can even process what was going on.” She sits up and clamber to my side.
