After years of being injected with wolfsbane, Gunner thought he would end up dead, but they never gave him enough doses to perish. Instead, it only strengthened his endurance towards the said poison. He became immune to its side effects. 

Over time, the same dose no longer affect him. When his captors realized it first, they had increased his dose. Gunner understood he had to act weak in front of them, make them think the wolfsbane was working. 

For nineteen years, he was locked up in an underground prison. He was deprived of the moon’s light and fed with scraps. From time to time, he would suffer a beating and he did not know why and what triggered it until Morfran came himself, cursing him for taking what his heart desired. 

The idea mortified him. He prayed to the moon goddess that his wife bore Morfran's advances. He used to think that Morfran had accepted the fact that Arabella was mated to him, but he was wrong to believe
