I stumbled back into my room, my tears blurring the world around me into a whirl of colors and shapes. What Lucas had told me weighed heavily on my chest and threatened to suffocate my lungs' ability to breathe. How had everything turned so impossibly complicated?

My sobs consumed me, and I fell to my bed. My heart felt like it was splintering into a million pieces, each one cutting deeper into my soul.
