Unexpected guests

As I stood in front of the mirror, buttoning my dress shirt, Emma sat on the bed behind me. She was whistling softly,but I could tell the whistle was saying so many messages. Her face was sad, and I felt a pang of guilt as I watched her keenly through the mirror. I understood that I was hurting her by going to this event with Ashley, but I couldn't say no to it because it involved the pack, just like my mother had said.

When I agreed to go to the event at the dining table, her face and mood changed instantly. She had eaten her food quickly and quietly. She didn't say anything to anybody and just went upstairs. I turned to look at her, and I could see the gloom in her eyes. I wanted to reach out to her and tell her that I was sorry, but I couldn't bring myself to do it. I didn't want her to know I was affected by her moodiness. I just couldn't start anything serious with her.

I took a deep breath, and I spun back to the mirror. I made an effort to focus on getting ready for the event,
