"Side Effects"

That evening, after eating our rabbit stew, I continued observing Varick as we headed back to our bedroom. I observed his every move as he prepared our bed.

He was very meticulous and surprisingly attentive to cleanliness that I wouldn’t have noticed if we didn’t have maids around.

He could be a great house wife if he were a woman, I mused. But he had done a lot today, so I offered to do it for him.

Only to rouse his annoyance, stating I shouldn’t do anything to harm the baby.

I intentionally rolled my eyes in front of him, and his glare darkened. Yet none of us would make an encore of our usual bickering as we turned our backs against each other in an unusually comical manner.

It was a long day, after all. Varick hadn’t had a wink of sleep since the invasion. I could at least allow him to rest.

We laid on bed in silence and the room was completely dim, minus the rushlight placed next to the bedpost.

We didn’t have enough wood for the fireplace and I took a mental note to get them
